The cantata and oratorio works of Jan Hanuš: musical-historical context and pedagogical use

The thesis consciously builds on previous literature devoted to the life and work of Jan Hanuš, a significant 20th-century Czech composer. It focuses on his cantata and oratorio works, which form a distinctive part of the author's legacy. The thesis aims not only to study the defined area of interest from due theoretical perspectives, but also to intervene in relevant related practical fields: the field of artistic interpretation and the field of music pedagogy. The first, theoretically focused goal is to map the entire defined area of Hanuš's output in the context of musical and social development during the 20th century, in the context of related music by other Czech composers, and in the context of Hanuš's personal compositional development. The second goal is to bring one of the selected works, Poselství: svědectví o smrti Jana Palacha (The Legacy: A Testimony on the Death of Jan Palach) from 1969, to a world premiere in the symbolic and social context that the work deserves. The third goal is to create didactic material that uses the specifics of the studied area of Hanuš's work to bring the musical language of contemporary artificial music closer to today's students of general music education. Cantatas in the Schwarzenberg Music Collection of the State Regional Archive in Český Krumlov

The diploma thesis deals with cantatas from the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century from the collection of Arnošt of Schwarzenberg, which are stored in the state archives in Český Krumlov. It is about two dozen compositions, most of which come from the estate of the music-loving prince Ernst of Schwarzenberg (1773-1821). The lyrics of most compositions are German, exceptionally some of them have French or Italian texts. Part of the work is a search performed in the state archive, the description of the collection and its breakdown from the aspect of con-tent and functionality and in terms of origin. Special attention is paid to the cantatas by Czech composers Vojtěch Jírovec, Leopold Koželuh and Pavel Mašek that are analyzed in more detail. Into the edition, also the first two parts of cantata Entjo-chung Deutschlands by Pavel Mašek, which is related to the personality of Karel of Schwarzenberg (1771-1820), were included.

Church Music of Johann Sebastian Bach

Annotation: Málková, Eva. Church Music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Prague: Hussite Theological Faculty, Charles University, 2012. Thesis. The aim of this thesis is to introduce church music of Johann Sebastian Bach and its theological announcement. By looking up and appraising musical-theological elements at Bach's work this thesis brings near to the reader the theological, philosophical and mystic thinking of Bach. By pre-understanding and complexity of perception of Bach's church music is possible to see deep sense and aim of artist's work. In the first (theoretical) part I am engaged in systems of thinking that could Bach's church work influence. Then I am specifying the pieces that are supposed to be church music. In the second (practical) part I am looking for musical- theological elements that could Bach be influenced with. By researching of Bach's artistic style I am trying to find correlation of musical and theological contents and I am trying to point out that the message of Bach's church work is relevant.

Birth of the Baroque Cantate

The thesis deals with the birth of the Baroque cantata in Northern and Central Germany. It introduces musical forms that led to the creation of cantata and thus significantly influenced its form, which crystalized during the Late Baroque period. The picture of Early Baroque German music is completed with profiles of three principal composers, on a selection of whose works the gradual development of this new musical form - the German Baroque cantata - is demonstrated. The second part is devoted to an analysis of a work representative of this style, Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu nostri, which is a supreme example of this musical form.

Ladislav Vycpálek: cantata Blessed is the Man…

The following bachelor thesis aims to explain the cantata Blessed is the Man… in the context of the contemporary cantata's production and through the reception of Ladislav Vycpálek's works. The opening chapter provides the composer's full biography with a list of his non- music activities and awards. The next part presents some testimonies of the composer's personality and a summary dealing with the acceptance of Vycpálek's works by his contemporary peers. It also takes into account the references of his music in academic publications. Afterwards, Vycpálek's own analysis of his cantatas is addressed and a general view of the Czech contemporary cantata's production is put into perspective. The actual discussion on Blessed is the Man… enriches through an interpretation of its libretto; it also stands as a summary of performances as well as its reviews. Lastly, the closing chapter states on the diverse turns in the reception of the cantata and Vycpálek's music during the 20th and 21st century; it basically looks for its own reasons and the context.

Cantata for the count J. V. Haugwitz´s birthday (1770-1842) written by Gottfried Rieger and the music at the castle in Náměšť nad Oslavou in his days.

This bachelor thesis deals with a transcript of a manuscript of a cantata from a composer Gottfried Rieger dedicated for birthday to the count of Náměšť Henry Wilhelm Haugwitz. i was provided by this manuscript by the Moravian Museum in Brno. The cantata, which is the topic of the thesis, was last performed at the beginning of the 19th century by a castle band. When rewriting this hand-written score i used the program Finale, which enabled me not only become more familiar with this piece of music that could be played in the castle again, but also with the times, where it was first presented. The manuscript, which i rewrote, clearly proves that musical life in the castle of Náměšť was very rich in those times and also that the count of Haugwitz had a lot of gifted musicians among his servants and music was his greatest interest.
